N1 - Funding Information:
In recent years most western industrialized countries have experienced a rise in the number of people living in poverty, and the same situation has occurred in Asian and Oceania countries. However, the majority of literature on poverty and poverty reduction has placed an emphasis on the policies (e.g., social assistance or social insurance) rather than the services/programs (e.g., social services provided by social workers). In order to bridge the gap, the focus of this special issue is to investigate what kind of role social work plays in reducing poverty. The EADP poverty team studied five countries: Australia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan. It has taken more than a year to prepare this special issue, with all the papers being examined by two or three reviewers from within the team and two other external reviewers. The papers are partially funded by the Center for Economic and Social Studies in Asia, at Yokohama National University, Japan.
