When Ag overlayers are deposited on a Pt(111) surface, a characteristic peak of Ag 4d appears. Due to the spin-orbit interaction, subsequent deposition of Ag causes the main peak splits into 4d3/2 and 4d5/2 peaks. This is indicative of the transformation from the atomic state to the solid state. The spectra become broader after the films were annealed at 600 K.
