摘要

The development of a high-resolution, data assimilating model of Monterey Bay area (MBa model) is one of the tasks of the project 'An Innovative Coastal-Ocean Observing Network' (ICON) sponsored by the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP). The objectives of this task are: 1) development of a fine-resolution, hydrodynamic model of the Monterey Bay area capable of resolving the temporal and spatial scales of corresponding oceanic processes and bringing together the unique oceanographic data sources available in this area; 2) development of technology for coupling the Monterey Bay area model with the Pacific West Coast model; and 3) development and implementation of data-assimilating capability for HF radar-derived surface velocity fields into the hydrodynamic model of the Monterey Bay area. Different scientific issues related to model initialization, forcing, open boundary conditions, and model spin-up are discussed. The results of model development, validation and verification, as well as HF radar data assimilation issues are presented.
