摘要
This study investigates whether Chinese native speakers and Japanese Chinese as a second language (CSL) learners are influenced by verb bias, polysemous senses, and information structure during the production of Mandarin ditransitive constructions. Specifically, the constructions under investigation include double object construction (DOC), prepositional dative construction (PDC), VgeiDO, and geiNVN. Four Chinese verbs, song “give; deliver”, fa “give; send”, diu “transfer; throw”, fen “separate; share”, are particularly investigated. We conduct two experiments, “Semantic Acceptance Score” and “Pair-Picture Description”, to compare the differences in production between native speakers and Japanese CSL learners. First, native speakers tend to use the verbs fa and diu with the PDC, while song and fen can be used in both PDC and DOC. Japanese CSL learners, on the other hand, prefer the geiNVN construction instead. Secondly, Chinese native speakers tend to choose different constructions to distinguish between verb meanings indicating on-site giving or remote transferring, but Japanese CSL learners only make this distinction when using the verb diu “throw; transfer”. Third, native speakers take information structure into account when they produce sentences, whereas Japanese CSL learners do not. Fourth, most of the constructions produced by Japanese CSL learners are different from those of Chinese native speakers and contain many errors. The results indicate that participants’ native linguistic background and the sequence in which the Chinese verbs were learned interfere with Japanese CSL learners’ production of Mandarin ditransitive constructions. That is, the current study finds that in the speakers’ cognitive processing of producing ditransitive constructions, the primary consideration is the tendency of different verb categories to collocate with specific constructions. Furthermore, when a verb conveys different semantic meanings, there are corresponding constructions that suit each semantic interpretation. Lastly, while native speakers exhibit awareness of information structure when producing ditransitive constructions, it is not the foremost consideration.
