新聞編譯課程之創新與大學生編譯策略之探討

In recent years, the News Translating-Editing (trans-editing) course has been popular among students in Taiwan. However, most of the instructors have adopted the traditional teaching method wherein the instructors pose a repository of expert knowledge with the students assuming a rather passive role. In a teacher-centered scenario, the instructor usually lectures, then gives the students translation assignments; after which the instructor will correct the students’ translation works to be followed by a discussion. More often than not, the instructor usually asks the students to translate a whole news article instead of doing trans-editing as required in the work place, thus resulting in a disparity between teaching effort and workplace requirements. In order to close the gap between classroom teaching and workplace demands, this research project aims at designing and implementing an innovative news trans-editing teaching model, with social constructivism as the theoretical framework of teaching to train students to work collaboratively in an authentic project of publishing a newspaper with their news trans-editing works. A total of 31 junior and senior students at Shih Hsin University participated in this action research project. Participant observation was mostly used in the data collection process. One of the researchers, being the instructor of the News Trans-editing class, was responsible for generating field notes and reflective memorandums. Individual interviews, focus group interview, and a questionnaire survey were conducted to gather more information on students’ participation and feedbacks, as well as to delve into the students’ trans-editing process and strategy use, their translation works and related research data. Students were also required to create their own translation portfolios in order to provide a continuous record of their learning process and translation competence development. After collecting all the data, qualitative coding methods and descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. It is hoped that the results of this research project will provide instructors of news trans-editing with more theoretical implications and practical teaching models so as to improve classroom teaching and eventually help translation instructors train more qualified news editing-translators that meet the workplace requirements.
