Abstract
To ensure the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and one of the Sustainable development goals, inclusive and equitable quality education and life for all, individuals with severe intellectual disabilities (ID) and/or autism spectrum disorders (ASD) necessitate holistic support to address their intricate communication and behavioral needs. According to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) model, a supportive environment plays a pivotal role in meeting their needs and facilitating participation in everyday activities. An ongoing project endeavors to develop an AI-assisted application utilizing ChatGPT to assist practitioners and caregivers in meeting the communication and behavioral needs of individuals with severe disabilities. This paper delineates the research project by presenting the research framework, an interdisciplinary and participatory approach, the use of AI technology, and insights from pilot research. The preliminary rollout of the application during the pilot study has shown promising indications regarding its validity, utility, and user satisfaction. A majority of users expressed satisfaction with the interface and acknowledged the app’s potential to aid in practical tasks while reducing time spent on receiving training to conduct assessments and develop intervention plans. Implications and considerations pertinent to the provision of services for individuals with disabilities are discussed. Additionally, future directions for technical advancements are provided.
