Abstract

Indoor lighting is necessary for modern cities. For the purpose of energy efficiency, this paper proposes a system based on Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology to redirect sun-light to target indoor activity areas. The paper identified both challenges in summoning a qualified level of illumination and in location-awareness for diverse indoor activities. The proposed design leverages a system of reflectors, photoresistors, and RFID tags to guide the sunlight to the right indoor area at the right time. An integration of human-in-the-loop (HiTL) approach further enhances the flexibility of the system, allowing it to adapt to the user-specific needs. The feasibility of illumination and energy efficiency were assessed through experiments conducted in an one-to-four scaled-down miniature space. The results demonstrated that the proposed system design can assist indoor lighting and can save energy by 36 to 83 percent, compared to conventional indoor lighting solutions.
