The Similarities and Differences of Thanks Responses between Native Speakers and Mandarin Teaching Materials in Taiwan

Abstract

There is growing research on thanks responses in linguistics. However, there are still research gaps on thanks responses in varieties of Mandarin Chinese. To explore the similarities and differences between the arrangements of instructional materials of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL) and the usage of native speakers, the present study uses Mandarin teaching materials, authentic materials collected from observation, and spoken corpus data to investigate the distribution of thanks response strategies used by native speakers of Mandarin in Taiwan. The results not only show reasons that possibly lead to differences between thanks responses in Mandarin teaching materials and the usage of native speakers, but also shed some light on the less explored aspects of thanks responses in the varieties of Modern Chinese.
