Abstract

Taiwan has gone through continual educational reforms since the 1990s. Its educational system is moving from uniformity to diversity, from authoritarian centralization to deregulation and pluralism. Several education-related laws and policies have been promulgated, amended, and implemented. Elementary and junior high schooling are compulsory for children from the ages of 6 to 15. The Ministry of Education is planning to make senior secondary schooling compulsory as well. Higher education policies have led to a substantial increase in the number of colleges and universities. In addition, special education and continuing education continue to be vigorously developed. However, Taiwan still has to resolve numerous issues related to different educational levels.
