Abstract
The different sizes of CdSe nanocrystals with a layer of surfactants capped on the surfaces have been synthesized. The hydrophobic type of CdSe nanocrystals can be transformed into a hydrophilic type by changing the surface capping group. The optical properties of the nanocrystals are characterized by absorption and emission spectroscopy. In addition, we have prepared the patterned self assembled monolayers of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic alkanethiol derivatives on a gold surface. The images of the monolayers obtained by a lateral force microscopy show two distinguishable regions. This result indicates that the differences on the images are induced from the frictional forces between tip and the functional groups of alkanethiol derivatives. We have deposited CdSe nanocrystals capped with hydrophobic ligands onto the monolayers. The successful selective deposition of CdSe nanocrystals onto hydrophilic alkanethiol monolayers has been studied by atomic force microscopy. We have found that monolayers of CdSe nanocrystals on the top of alkanethiol monolayers are formed.
