Abstract

Boxing is a fierce exercise, which is not so popular with women in Taiwan. Beginning in 2000, Taiwanese sport administrators intended to develop women’s boxing. In 2001, Zhou Siyin (周思吟) won the 46-kg silver medal in the 1st Asian Amateur Boxing Championships, afterwards winning medals in the subsequent games. Chen Nienchin (陳念琴), the first Taiwanese woman boxer, participated in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, there were four qualified women boxers in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, and Huang Hsiaowen (黃筱雯) won the first 51-kg bronze medal for Taiwan. With progressive performance, boxing has gradually attracted more attention and gained more support from government. This study uses historical research methods, analysing documents, documentaries, and interviews with athletes, coaches and related persons to discuss the development of current women’s boxing and its success in Taiwan.
