Abstract

We applied self-assembly method to fabricate alignment layers. The naphthalene ring of 1 Isothiocyanato-naphthalene (NIC) is grafted onto terminal of amino-functionalized (APTS) diamondlike carbon which is prior sputtered with argon beams (Ar-DLC). The alignment layer of surface chemical characterization and bonding orientation is examined by synchrotron photoemission spectra and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure. Our results show the surface alignment in terms of enhanced dichroic ratio corresponding to the aromatic ring, indicates the orientation of the aromatic rings is well-aligned on the treated Ar-DLC surfaces.
