Abstract
The refractive index of magnetic fluid films was studied in an external magnetic field. It was observed that the refractive index was modulated as the field exceeded a critical strength. The refractive index was found to be higher for stronger magnetic field. The refractive index was calculated by taking into account the formation of the columns and the variation in the concentration of the liquid phase in magnetic fluid films under external fields. The results imply that the variation in the refractive index as with the change in magnetic field strength was due to the phase separation.
