Abstract

Limenitis formosicola Matsumura is an obscure taxon described based on a unique type. No subsequent specimen has been observed or taken since the original description of the taxon. After examining the type of the taxon preserved in the Matsumura collection in University of Hokkaido, we found that the diagnostic characters of this type agree with those of L. glorifica, which is a species endemic to Japan. We concluded that the type specimen of L. formosicola was probably originated from a mislabeled specimen of L. glorifica, and should be synonymized with the latter.
