Abstract
This paper presents novel multiresolution progressive image transmission (PIT) design algorithms with storage size and transmission time constraints. In the algorithms, the resolution at each stage and the storage size of the whole PIT systems can be controlled. Moreover, the transmission time at each stage or the accumulated transmission time up to the final stage can be specified before the design. The algorithms use the wavelet transform and the entropy-constrained vector quantization (ECVQ) design algorithm to construct PIT systems. The wavelet transform is used to achieve the multiresolution transmission. The ECVQ algorithm is employed to control the storage sizes and transmission times of the PIT systems. From the simulations, the algorithms are shown to be effective in implementing the PIT systems where the resolution, transmission time and storage size are important concerns.
