Abstract

This paper presents a smart card that integrates a one-time password generator and a flexible electrophoretic display (EPD). Asking a card user to enter a time-variable password provides added security by ensuring the card owner actually holds the credit card when making card-not-present transactions. With the inherent properties of EPDs such as flexibility and ultra-thinness, the newly developed smart card keeps the same form factor as traditional credit cards. The power consumption is kept to a minimum because the display is bistable and thus allows a thin lithium-ion polymer battery to continuously power the device for longer than three years.
