Abstract

The results of a comprehensive survey on finite element codes in metal cutting are presented. The basic finite element simulation methodology for 2-D plane strain analysis is in a relative advanced stage of development. Using a proper material behavior model, some of the current methods are capable of predicting chip initiation, tool forces, chip thickness, plastic strain and residual stress in the surface region and shear angle.
