LCS crystals were grown at 40°C from aqueous solutions made up of equimolar proportions of lithium sulfate monohydrate and cesium sulfate of analytical grade. Small quantities of ammonium sulfate and ammonium chromate (NH4+ was about 5 molar percent of Cs ÷ in solution) were added into the solutions as impurities. The grown crystals, yellowish in color characteristic of the chromate ions, are usually in the form of pseudo-hexagonal plates composed of 60 °-twins. The c-axis is perpendicular to the hexagonal plates and the b-axis was identified by X-ray diffrac- * Supported in part by the National Science Council under project number NSC76-0208-M003-09.

N2 - Electron paramagnetic resonance of the ammonium free radical was used to study the ferroelastic transition of LiCsSO4 at 202 K. The number of the magnetically inequivalent sites of the ammonium free radical doubles that allowed by the monoclinic lattice below the transition temperature, and this implies that the free radical can take up more orientations than that allowed by the lattice point-group.
