Abstract

The latest video coding standard, H.266/Versatile Video Coding (VVC), provides higher coding efficiency than its predecessor, H.265/High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). The quadtree and nested multi-type tree (QT/MTT) partition structure in H.266/VVC greatly increases the coding time. In this paper, a fast QT/MTT early termination algorithm is proposed to bypass the coding unit (CU) depths that occur less frequently or skip the ternary tree partition based on the statistics of conditional probabilities. The fast MTT decision algorithm is also proposed based on Pearson correlation analysis, which utilizes the rate-distortion costs of the spatial and temporal coding tree units. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can effectively achieve encoding time reduction and maintain the bit rate.
