Abstract

This study explores changes in English as a foreign language (EFL) learners' epistemic curiosity and foreign language reading anxiety during an extensive reading experience supported by AI-assisted summarization. Sixty-five senior high school students participated in six self-paced reading sessions guided by AI-generated prompts and feedback. A one-group pretest-posttest design was used, with data collected via the Epistemic Curiosity Questionnaire (ECQ) and the Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (FLRAS). Findings indicate an increase in students' curiosity toward unfamiliar topics, while reading anxiety showed mixed outcomes, with some students becoming more aware of cultural and linguistic challenges. The results suggest that AI-assisted summarization can enhance engagement but should be carefully designed to address learner anxiety.
