Abstract

The effects of a Ag buffer layer on the magnetic properties of ultrathin Co/Ge(111) films were reported. It was demonstrated that the ferromagnetic inactive layers can be reduced by introducing a Ag buffer layer without changing the magnetic anisotropy. The boundary between ferromagnetic and nonferromagnetic regions shifted to a lower Co thickness from 10 to 5 monolayers (ML) as the thickness of the Ag layer increased from 0 to 6 ML.
