Abstract
A study was conducted to demonstrate the formation and use of dimensionally reduced one-dimensional chains of TiS2. TiS2 was synthesized using TiCl4 and elemental Se as precursors. Reactants were annealed in a Parr reactor at 220 °C for 5 days and TiSeO(en) was synthesized similarly except for Se powder being dissolved in excess en without NaBH4 at 180 °C. The Ti:Se stoichiometry for the two samples was confirmed via X-ray fluorescence and the 2:8:2 C:H:N ratio was confirmed by elemental analysis. Investigations revealed that TiSe2(en) and TiSeO(en) had a similar crystalline structure to TiS2(en). The crystal structures were determined via Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder diffraction patterns using the TOPAS Academic software package.
