Abstract
Rapid social changes and the development of the Internet have produced profound influences on children's reading behavior. The degree of children's interaction with texts has been decreasing while children's reading interests and reading comprehension have been as well declining. The introduction of newspaper reading into school education may helpfully improve the current inadequate cultivation of reading abilities. The idea of combining newspaper reading with school education originated in the United States and has been soon widely promoted around the world afterwards. Taiwan has forwarded this movement since 2005. The idea of ”newspapers in education” takes advantage of newspapers as reading materials with shorter length, closely connected with everyday situations, and promptly reflective of current events. These characteristics of newspapers may help inspire reading interests, cultivate reading habits, and enhance abilities of comprehension and judgment. This empirical study was conducted from October 2009 to June 2010, adopting survey and interview methods for data collection. This study aimed to investigate the current status of newspapers in education in Taipei, Taiwan, specifically the effects of newspaper reading activity performed in elementary education. Approaches and challenges of implementing newspaper reading in elementary education were explored, with corresponding recommendations for further promotion.
