Abstract
Basketball, a sport from the west, was introduced into Taiwan and became a mainstream element of body culture of teenagers, it was combined with the ancient Eastern yoga emphasizes the harmony of body, mind and the universe. What is the possible intersection? This study examines the content and investigates the practical meaning of a yoga basketball course, through the implementation of this course upon a University Basketball Association men's division I basketball varsity team. Drawing on the oriental philosophy of yoga sutra, through action research and diverse methods in data collection, this study applied a four-way strategic method: reviewing classics, course mapping, practical action and reflections, and multiple points of verification. The results showed that: 1. Yoga basketball encompasses rich and meaningful contents, including a cognitive and philosophy course, yoga asana, meditation, cultural events, and social service. Notably, synergies arise if learning activities can be paired with one another. 2. The practical meaning of a yoga basketball training course can be embodied in diverse combinations from the participants' inside out: the harmony of body and mind, man and the other, and man and nature. The course also helps to enrich the life experiences and horizons of the participants. The ability of yoga basketball to awaken deeper inner self mindfulness in ordinary people is yet to be studied or put into practice. We conclude that when yoga is added to a basketball training course, the combination offers a new insight that is worth further investigation and widely applicable into other aspects of life.
