Abstract
The subject specialists are academic and research librarians withspecialized knowledge, skills, and experience of particular fields. Anemerging shortage of librarians resulting from baby boomers reachingretirement age means that promotion of recruitment is becomingnecessary. This paper describes a U.S.-based study focusing onunderstanding potential subject specialists’ academic backgrounds, theircareer choices and career plans, and factors that attract and influencethem to choose librarianship as a career. Survey and in-depth interviewwere used as data collection methods. Recommendations for recruitmentstrategies are provided.
