Abstract

On 26 August 2004, the carcass of a recently deceased Oriental-Honey-Buzzard (Pernis ptilorhyncus) was discovered at RuiFang, Taipei County, northern Taiwan. According to many feather sheaths at same growth stage on its wings and tail, it was verified to be a newly fledged young bird. Because the time for the autumn migration had not yet arrived, and it was unlikely that the bird had been capable of a sea crossing, we judged therefore that the bird had been born in Taiwan earlier that season. This is just the third record of an Oriental-Honey-Buzzard breeding in Taiwan, and the first specimen evidence of such breeding. The existence of this specimen also provides very useful material to compare the morphological and genetic characteristics with populations from other areas.
