Description
Paul Ricoeur is a pre-eminent contemporary French philosopher. If postmodern thoughts are considered revolutionary against continental philosophy, then his philosophy can be regarded as a rather moderate, but nevertheless critical reform. In comparing Ricoeur with other postmodern philosophers, the biggest difference is he vouches for the idea of reconstruction and not for deconstruction. The objective of this research project is to explore the conception of creativity in contexts of Ricoeur’s core ideas. Like the term ‘reconstruction,’ ‘creativity’ is not a typical Ricoeurian term. If we look at the issues of his concern, however, like symbol, metaphor, mimesis, narrative and identity, these topics are related to the idea of creativity. Ricoeur appears to apply his ideas of distanciation and detour to gain access to creativity. Ricoeur’s different ideas of creativity are developed with the help of different conceptual structures and refer to various disciplines. Metaphor, for example, refers to classical rhetoric, poetics and impacts semantics, semiotics and hermeneutics. Mimesis, narrative and identity deal with problems of narratology, phenomenology, hermeneutics and analytical philosophy. The proposed research project will attempt to apprehend Ricoeur’s conception and method of creativity with regard to linguistics, semantics, hermeneutics and other human-related disciplines.
