Description
This paper studies three usages of e's as sentence final particles (SFPs) in Taiwan Southern Min. Based on tone sandhi, scope and the interaction with other SFPs, the three usages of e’s are intermediate anterior e (AspP), scalar focus e (sFocusP) and exclamative e (iForceP). Their projections show the following hierarchy: AspP < sFocusP < iForceP. If we follow Wu's (2000) analysis of the cleft e at T, and adopt Paul and Whitman's (2008) analysis of the Mandarin Chinese propositional assertion marking de at a non-root C for its counterpart e in TSM, then we can arrive at the following hierarchy for the various e's: AspP < sFocusP < TP < (non-root CP) < iForceP.
