Objective: In this industry-university collaborative study, the effectiveness of robot-assisted board games targeting institutionalized older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) was investigated to improve their cognitive function, general self-efficacy, satisfaction with life, and reduce depression through a quasi-experimental design.
Methods: This board game consists of six sets, each aimed at training orientation, memory, attention and calculation, construction, oral comprehension and behavioral abilities, and language proficiency. A total of 109 institutionalized older adults from four long-term care facilities were assigned to the experimental (n = 52) and comparison groups (n = 57). The study adopted a quasi-experimental research design. The participants in the experimental group underwent a 12-week cognitive training program. Participants in both groups completed before-and-after and 3-month follow-up measurements for outcome variables, including the cognitive function (scores of mini–mental state examination (MMSE) and ADAS-Cog), depression, general self-efficacy, and life satisfaction. Data were analyzed using the generalized estimating equation (GEE). The system usability scale (SUS) was used to assess the usability of the program.
Results: GEE analyses revealed that the experimental group exhibited significant post-intervention improvements in the MMSE, ADAS-Cog, depression, general self-efficacy, and satisfaction with life. These effects persisted for the 3-month follow up. The mean SUS score was 87.50, indicating that the participants’evaluations were excellent. Furthermore, the research team used the board games to conduct cognitive training at multiple long-term care facilities and received high praise.
Conclusion: The findings of this study revealed that interactive robot-assisted board games can improve cognitive function, general self-efficacy, satisfaction with life, and reduce depression among institutionalized older adults. The participants’ evaluations of the program were excellent. The administration of long-term care facilities should adopt robot-assisted board games as a training tool to assist in health promotion programs to reduce the deterioration of cognitive and mental health among institutionalized older adults. These board game products have the potential for promotion.
