Description
During his reign, Emperor Yung-cheng had been very much bothered by rumor. Such situation occurred mainly because of the dispute over the succession conflict in the late Yung-cheng period and the distrust of public opinion. Moreover, Emperor Yung-cheng himself also revealed the false accusation from the documents of his personal preference, such as alcoholism, harsh manners, and confiscation. Emperor Yung-cheng refuted that these malicious accusations were urban legends and tried to target the rumor spreaders as dissidents. He transformed his attitude toward the rumor from being passive to being aggressive. With the consolidation of his regime, he eradicated not only the minor party but the core members of the Y?n-sy partisans. Meanwhile, he commanded to compile Shangyu neige and Ta-i chueh-mi lu, as well as to preach regularly for the purpose to propagandize repeatedly. However, as the adverse impact is hard to define, it would be difficult to investigate the validity of the rumor due to the availability of the limited documents. In addition, it is arduous to come to a consensus due to different interpretations of documents. Therefore, based on the method of the investigation of rumor in social science, this project aims to analyze the ways and the processes of how Emperor Yung-cheng manipulated rumor to achieve the goal to consolidate his power in terms of the rise and the spread of rumor; Emperor Yung-cheng’s refutation against rumor; as well as rumor and the reign.
