In recent years, resilience thinking has been increasingly used for examining how cities can face external change and achieve long-term sustainability. Since food security has always been a key resilience facet for people living in cities, it is important to assess the vulnerability of food system in the modern city. Despite the importance of food resources for effective functioning of cities, there is still a gap in the urban research regarding the definition of vulnerability of urban food system and development a framework for its assessment. To fill this lacuna, this research project aims to specify the main components of urban food system vulnerability and develop a comprehensive framework for its assessment based on urban metabolism methodology. Taipei Metropolitan Area is selected as case study in this study to investigate the vulnerability of urban food system such as availability, accessibility, affordability, and acceptability of food supply, transmission and distribution over time. The energy consumption related urban food system will be analyzed and the vulnerability within this system will be assessed in the first and second years. In the second year, the water resources and materials (package materials) related urban food system will be analyzed and the vulnerability within this system will be assessed further. Moreover, the comprehensive vulnerability assessment system of urban food system will be developed and some strategies to improve the urban food resilience will be evaluated by scenario analysis in the third year.
