Project Details
Description
The purpose of this two-year project was mainly to explore how to teach high school students to read a textbook. In the first year, a content analysis of the textbook was conducted to find out whether the current textbooks used in the middle schools are friendly or considerate enough for students to read alone. Besides, interviews with students and teachers were also conducted to understand those difficulties faced by students were understood by their teachers. In the second year, the researcher entered the field and designed a reading program with three high school teachers. The main purpose of this program was to teach students how to use different reading strategies based on different text types and the learning goals of different disciplines. Biology and History were chosen as the two disciplines, and the text types were focused on the narrative, informational text, and persuasive text. Suggestions for teachers were provided based on the findings of this two-year project.
