Description
When the Singaporean government is more confident dealing with the issue of "Chineseness," how have they remembered the pre-war history of Singapore and the Chinese figures of British colonial times? Has memories of "ancestors" per se been part of the political needs of Singaporean nation-building? This study has found that memories of Chinese figures in earlier times are part of a larger historical narrative. Therefore, this study explores how local scholarship has remembered Chinese ancestors who had never imagined an independent "Singapore" and yet made significant contributions which paved the way for a future Singapore.
