Project Details
Description
This project seeks to examine syntactic notions like tense, agreement, A-movement, and implicit subjects and determine how they interact in non-finite clauses in English and in Romance languages. The research questions advanced here have implications for the Principles and Parameters theory and how abstract syntactic properties are acquired by speakers and interact to yield different grammatical properties found in specific languages. The results of this project will then be of interest to scholars interested in different topics in syntactic theory. Hopefully, this project can inspire research on related issues in different languages. Other possible extensions include areas of research that deal with more specific variation between different dialects of a particular language (for example, European vs. Brazilian Portuguese) or between different types of registers within the language, which would make them relevant from the point of view of sociolinguistics as well.
