Description

Video modeling is an evidence-based practice for teaching students with autism. However, the dissemination and application is at its infant stage. This research proposal is designed to continue develop the Three-tier Video Modeling Intervention Model (3TVM) which was built based on cost and resource re-allocation. The purpose is to reduce education intervention cost in order to better support practitioners acceptability and usability of evidence-based practice and to translate research into practice. This research proposal consisted of three years and received funding for conducting the first year tasks. The first year, the investigator initiated the secondary tier intervention research evidence and verified the bottom-up approach of the 3TVM. The results showed: A. The overall class average of independent handwashing steps increased after secondary tier video modeling intervention; the non-overlapping percentage was 67%. Among 11 students, there were only two performed below baseline average. This indicated the effect of secondary tier video modeling may help improve participants’ target skill and thus successfully verified each tier of the 3TVM. B. Following investigator’s primary tier video modeling handwashing study (Wang, 2016), the only participant would did not learn the target skill entered into the secondary tier video modeling study and all learned eventually. This indicated bottom-up approach of the 3TVM made it possible to eliminate the numbers of students who needed the tertiary tier intervention and thus successfully reduced educational cost. The investigator also generated the possible cost analysis items based on the interviews of the practitioners. For example, the time and skills of video production and assessment, time of explaining the procedure to others, coordinating and implementing the intervention, and cost of computer, software, space and electricity. All were corresponded to the proposal literature. The above results will facilitate the following two year tasks of this proposal. The investigator will submit two manuscripts for publication and keep finding resources to complete the rest of the proposal.
