In recent years, the Taiwan government has been actively promoted a friendly environment for the smart city movement. Adequate physical activity (PA) is one of the effective methods to maintain people’s health and wellness. Although traditional exercise interventions have been shown to be effective in promoting PA and in bringing health benefits to the public, past investigations have not paid much attention to health promotion strategies in the public field as well as lack of provision of the assistance and application of sports technologies. Therefore, the primary purposes of the study were 1) to survey on public demand and current situation on the installation of a physical activity interactive system (PAIS) in public spaces and; 2) to develop a PAIS based on data analysis and experts’ opinions with integrated somatosensory detection technology. In addition, we evaluated the effects of the PAIS on people’s physical and psychological benefits. Methods: 1) we studied public needs and current status for placing PAIPs in public places by using a questionnaire developed via a focus group from multidisciplinary experts; 2) we conducted a quasi-experimental intervention to understand the effects of the PAIP on the physical and psychological health of participants. 76 participants were recruited in this study. The participants were asked to use the PAIP placed in a campus of the National Taiwan Normal University at least 2 times daily throughout the study. Functional fitness tests and a set of questionnaires were used for evaluations of physical and psychological benefits of the intervention. Results: 34 participants (intervention group =17; control group = 17) completed the pre-and post-tests and the questionnaires and fulfilled the interventive requirements. The results from the survey showed that 80% of the responders (N= 400; male = 187, female =211; refuse to answer =2) were optimistic on the installation of the PAIPs in public places and were willing to use it. Also, following a 12-week quasi-experimental intervention, the improvements on the arm and leg strength were noted in the intervention group (p < .05) as well as their life quality (p < .05), but not showed statistical significance vs. the control group. Conclusion: Our research results can provide useful information for the PA promotion of the Taiwan government and the health- and sports-related departments. Through the integration and collaboration between the Industries and the Academia, our research group developed PAIP systems and provided solid evidence of its practical and technological applications. Conclusions: this results from this study can help to transform the research outcomes to provide the application of smart sports cities and sports technology industries for business operation, Moreover, the results provide practices for realizing the vision of a healthy nation that integrates sports technology.
