Description

National Taiwan Normal University strives to promote adaptive reading and cultivate independent readers through providing them book levelling technology, instant feedback and reading portfolios. Therefore, it organized “SmartReading Contest on Popular Science” over the period from December, 2019 to June, 2020; and the prize presentation ceremony was held on July, 2020. The contest spanned six months, in which its participating schools come from six different counties and cities including Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Taichung City, Yunlin County, Tainan City etc. Over 1000 participants, ranging from Grade 3 to Grade 8 joined the contest. They were divided into 6 groups according to their grades. When students accessed the “SmartReading Adaptive Reading” system during the contest, the system diagnosed students’ reading ability and matched it with appropriate level of books according to their difficulty. This not only increased the efficiency when students chose their books, but also stimulated students’ learning motivation and enhanced learning effectiveness. It was like a reading marathon which takes over half a year. By means of a pretest, several reading mission challenges and a posttest, students’ reading-ability growth and popular science knowledge acquired were both assessed. Thereby, it helps students, teachers as well as parents to monitor and master students’ reading and learning progress, so as to nurture a new generation of independent readers.
