Our long term goal is enhancing the popularization of the biotechnology knowledge by using zebrafish model. This proposed project is a nice extension of our ongoing project, we developed a series of experiments by using zebrafish combined with smart phone and tablet computer for promoting popularization of biotechnology and established the seed teachers training program. Biotechnology application has significant impacts on our daily lives, but the content of biotechnology is difficult for the publics to comprehend that leads to unnecessary misunderstanding and repelling. Therefore, biotechnology knowledge popularization is essential for helping the publics for understanding the application and the future of biotechnology. There are three aims of the proposed project, which summarized below 1. Add new seed teacher training district. In our ongoing project, we selected several districts including Hualien, Chiayi, Taoyuan, Keelung, Ilan, Kaohsiung, Nantou, Kinmen for training seed teacher. We arrange new districts such as Taitung, Pingtung, Tainan etc. for continuing the seed teacher training program. We shall collaborate with the national Teaching Advisory Teams and the National Taiwan Science Education for cultivating more seed teacher nation wide. 2. Provide advanced course for the seed teachers via workshop. Based on feedbacks of the participants, the teaching materials still require fine-tuning and practical experience such as equipment setting is being demand. We would like to set up a series of workshop for providing the trainees and seed teachers for practicing their skill. It will be helpful for them to set up their own equipment in their school even at home. Workshop activities will include (a) breeding and rearing of zebrafish.(b)handmade behavioral chamber and the usage of monitoring software.(c)Observation of the embryonic development by time-lapse photography. (d) Electrophysiological recording and monitoring the gastrointestinal tract activities etc. In order to attract more participants to join the workshop, we increase a course about transparent fish skeleton specimen production. 3. Develop science popularization event for the students of rural and islet areas. We will focus on developing educational materials and holding promotion activities at elementary and junior high schools in the rural, aboriginal, or islet areas, so that an additional effect of lessening the science learning discrepancy in these areas can be achieved. The implementation of this project has following benefits, the educational materials will make accessible through internet, facilitating the use by school teachers and self-learners at home, and the participated graduate students and seed teachers have the opportunity to have experience on running a popular science promotion project. We also hope to drive in conjunction with other academic institutes to participate in the promotion of the popularization of science in Taiwan.
