Description

Based on the foundation of the “China Biographical Database” (CBDB), by modifying and expanding the categories and functions of the CBDB according to the characteristics of modern Taiwanese historical figures and the historical period, this project aims to create a “Taiwan Biographical Database” (TBDB) that meets the needs of modern Taiwanese historical studies. This project will utilize text mining and social network analysis on two topics to evaluate their effectiveness and reliability to ensure TBDB can meet the need of historical researchers. In the first year, this project is text mining the original texts of the historical figures in the economic and social sections, setting up the ontological framework, such as categories, attributes, and relations, in order to provide the necessary information for the TBDB construction and the requirements of the UI system for the design and development of the text mining tools and SNA tools. In the second year, this project sets as the main topic “Social Network Analysis of the Leader Class: Doctors as the Major Focus.” By applying TBDB as a supplementary tool for analysis in order to understand the social phenomena of the tremendous lively doctor class in Changhua County, we will observe the social networks of the doctors in Central Taiwan and how they are connected to the social networks of the historical figures in the economic, political, and cultural spheres. With the advantage of digital tools’ capability to process huge data efficiently and to visualize the results, this project will examine the political, economic, cultural, and social networks of the doctors to answer whether the doctors had become a new venue to prominence after the cancelation of the civil service examinations. This project will also analyze how the doctors strengthen and broaden their influence through political, economic, social and marriage relations.
