Project Details
Description
This research project aimed to develop a board game for teaching and learning the biodiversity issues. A series of board game based instructions have been designed and implemented to fulfill the needs of students of various learning stages. An emerging game-based learning approach, using board games as instruction, may be more effective in motivating students’ learning, and more flexible for cultivating their perspectives from different angles. Through appropriately designing the game mechanisms, we can simulate real-life scenarios to engage students in decision-making and problem-solving process, which instructional objectives conforms with the core competencies addressed in the new Grade 1-12 curriculum guidelines. The board game developed in this project adopted the controversial events regarding biological conservation and economic development in Taiwan. The conceptual structure of the biodiversity issues contains ecological, economic, socio-cultural, and political perspectives. In the game processing, students must face dilemmas between socioeconomic and environmental consequences, and making decisions by considering different standpoints. They were required to work with group members to handle various missions. As such, they should be equipped with appropriate attitudes, values, and logical thinking skills. The instructional module includes the board game set, mobile application for recording trend chart, instructional manual, student worksheets for different learning stages, and assessment instruments. This board game instruction has been evaluated for its feasibility and effectiveness. Reports about the outcomes of its implementation have been published in local and international journals and the board game set has also been available as a commodity.
