Purpose: This study examined the effects of resistance exercise (RE) with or without failure on eating behavior. Methods: In total, 18 healthy young men were included. Participants completed 2 moderate-load RE trials (3 sets of 70% 1RM) with or without training to failure and a control trial (no exercise), in a randomized, crossover design. Subjective appetite ratings (hunger, satisfaction, fullness, prospective food consumption, and nausea) and levels of lactate, acyl-ghrelin, and peptide YY were evaluated before exercise and 90 minutes after exercise (post 0, 30, 60, and 90). Ad libitum energy intake was determined 90 minutes after exercise. Food preferences were measured 30 and 90 minutes after exercise and after ad libitum energy intake. Participants recorded over 3-day (the test day and one day before and after the test day) energy intake. Results: Hunger was significantly lower in the failure trial than the other two trials (post 0). Both fullness and prospective food consumption in the failure trial were significantly higher than the other two trials (post 0), with the non-failure trial also significantly higher than the control trial (post 0). Nausea was significantly higher in the failure trial than the other two trials (post 0-30), with non-failure trial significantly different from the control trial (post 0). Acyl-ghrelin levels were significantly lower in the failure trial compared to the control trial (post 0-90), and the non-failure trial was significantly lower compared to the control trial (post 0-30). PYY levels in the failure trial were significantly higher than the other two trials (post 30). Lactate levels were significantly higher than the other two trials (post 0-90), with non-failure trial significantly higher than the control trial (post 0-60). After failure exercise, participants preferred low-fat foods and sweet foods more than the control trial. There were no significant differences in post-exercise ad libitum energy intake, three-day energy intake, and three-day nutrient intake between the three trials. Conclusions: Resistance exercise may lead to temporary appetite suppression and changes in food preferences but does not significantly impact overall energy intake, which can be beneficial for weight control. Future research could assess the relationship between appetite and food preferences and energy intake and further investigate the long-term effects and potential mechanisms of resistance exercise prescriptions on energy intake.
