Description
In the contemporary academic research field in Taiwan, the study of Chinese philosophy and literature places a high emphasis on the interpretation of classical texts. However, the reflection on methods of textual interpretation remains quite limited. This project invites scholars in the fields of Chinese literature and comparative philosophy in Taiwan to explore the relationship between textual interpretation and philosophical methods. The research results will be compiled into a book in two volumes: the first volume is titled "Encounters between Text and Method," and the second volume is titled "Returning from Method to Text." The aim of this project is to reflect on the interaction and practice between the dimensions of "from text to method" and "from method to text." The first part of the book focuses on uncovering the tendencies of thought and interpretive methods in classical texts and classical traditions. The second part primarily examines approaches and critical reflections in cross-cultural philosophy and comparative philosophy. However, these two parts of the research are interconnected. That is, the methods in the texts already contain, whether implicitly or explicitly, cross-cultural contexts, thoughts, and practices, while the texts in the methods illustrate that even the most highly abstract theoretical reflections in the fields of Chinese literature and philosophy often need to return to the understanding, interpretation, and practice of classical texts. Therefore, the encounter between texts and methods also signifies the importance of returning from thinking about methods to concrete texts. However, returning to the text is not just about returning to a static understanding; rather, it points towards a process of practice, creation, and transformation in the reading and writing, thinking and dialogue. Hence, the title of the research project's book is "Texts and Methods: The Interaction and Practice of Classical Thinking and Cross-cultural Philosophy."
