Project Details
Description
The diverse services provided by ecosystems are fundamental to the survival of both humans and all living organisms. Ecosystem services are closely related to the structure and function of ecosystems, and changes in the ecosystem's structure or function can potentially impact the services it provides. The structure and function of ecosystems are influenced not only by natural factors such as climate, hydrology, and topography but also by human activities. Therefore, to fully understand changes in ecosystem services, it is essential to have a holistic understanding of the interaction between society and ecosystems. In addition, a comprehensive understanding of changes in socio-ecological systems cannot be achieved solely through short-term, one-time investigations. Monitoring and research over longer time scales are necessary to fully capture ecosystem changes and to gather sufficient information to discern subtle trends of ecosystems. The establishment of the long-term socio-ecological research sites in Taiwan is aimed at having a deep understanding of the ecosystems that sustain us and the associated societal processes.
In the first year of this project, two demonstration sites were selected and established: Changhua Station and Feitsui Station. The former represents the complex interweaving of a semi-fishing, semi-agricultural social environment with coastal wetland ecosystems on the western coast of Taiwan, while the latter represents the social-ecological system of a forested tea plantation in the Taipei Water Source District Area. The two sites mark the beginning of the establishment of long-term socio-ecological core observatories based on the concept of core facilities, promoting long-term interdisciplinary sustainable scientific research. In the second
year, Lyudao Station was added, and we are fostering the fourth site, the Hualien
Station.
To make the progress of this research more accessible to more people, the team has completed the construction of the website for the long-term socio-ecological research on Google Sites. This year, the entrance website is available in both Chinese and English. Furthermore, to enhance the utility of the data collected at the long-term socioecological core observatories, the project collaborates with the National Science and Technology Council's core facilities and databases and introduces the Taiwan Long-Term Socioecological Core Observatory at various academic and non-academic events.
