Description

This is a report about the results of the third year of a 3-year research project on "Data Science oriented Computational Thinking and Programming Instruction." In the previous two years we have developed course materials and a project-sharing web system for a general education course. We evaluated them in three classes in three semesters and collected data from questionnaires, exercises, and exams. Through data analysis, we found that students were satisfied with our course design, materials, and web system. More than 70% of students thought that they developed programming ability and understood the value of programming. More than 60% of students were more interested in learning programming after taking our course. More than 80% of students agreed that they learned new programming knowledge, new viewpoints of data analysis, and new presentation methods by using our web system. As for the factors related to learning performance, the prior knowledge on programming is one key factor. Focusing on the students with little prior knowledge, we found that the motivation to enroll the course, the expectation of spending hours per week, and the expected score are related to learning performance.
