Description
As higher education institutions play an essential role in promoting sustainable development, they need to take concrete actions to practice sustainable governance (ESG) and the SDGs of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Times Higher Education (THE) has published the Impact Rankings of World Universities since 2019. It is the first ranking system to evaluate universities based on their performance in the SDGs. It is regarded as a tool to understand the effectiveness of universities in implementing the SDGs. This research plan analyzes Taiwan's higher education performance and trends in THE Impact Ranking. It also analyzes eight representative universities' sustainability reports to understand their SDG implementation practices.
This study uses descriptive statistics to discuss the trend of Taiwan's higher education institutions in THE influence rankings and the implementation of various sustainable development goals; it also uses the sustainable development goal report evaluation framework proposed by Monteiro et al. (2023) to conduct a content analysis on the SDG reports of eight universities and compare the differences in the disclosure of various SDG information.
The research results found that the number of universities in Taiwan participating in THE influence rankings has increased yearly. In the latest ranking results, the number of Taiwan's public universities, public technical, and private universities on the list has exceeded 50% of the number of colleges and universities of the same type in the country. A comprehensive study of the impact ranking results of Taiwan's higher education institutions in THE and the SDGs reports shows the same trend. SDG9 is the goal with the best ranking, and the lowest ranking scores are SDG5, 14, and 15. SDG14 is the goal with the lowest information disclosure ratio.
