Description

This study investigates the effects of group creative dynamics on Taiwanese university students' affective responses and creative outcomes. It addresses three research issues: (1) What are the relationships among group creative dynamics, creative motivation, creative anxiety and creative writing? (2) Does group creative dynamics cast any indirect effect on the university students' creative writing through creative motivation? (3) Does group creative dynamics cast any indirect effect on the university students' creative writing through creative anxiety? This study was implemented on students from four Freshman English classes at a public university in Taiwan. All of the participants completed a creative story-writing task. In the writing task, they worked in small groups to brainstorm creative writing ideas for their group work. Then, they filled out a Team Climate Inventory upon completion of the discussion; near the halfway of the writing process, a motivation survey and an anxiety survey were subsequently completed. Finally, the participants' creative stories were evaluated by four university English professors, who judged the levels of content creativity and linguistic accuracy in the students' stories by means of the Consensual Assessment Technique. Results of the study show that group creative dynamics was not significantly correlated with the participants' creative motivation, creative anxiety and their final writing products. Neither creative motivation nor creative anxiety mediated the relationship of group creative dynamics to their writing performances. On the contrary, the participants' creative motivation positively influenced the level of linguistic accuracy in their creative stories, while their creative anxiety negatively affected the level of content creativity. All in all, this study discovered that group creative dynamics did not play a significant role in affecting English L2 learners' motivation and anxiety during the creative process. Instead, creative motivation and creative anxiety both had significantly stronger influences.
