Description
With the climate of globalization, human mobilization and interaction of people from multiple cultures has significantly increased. Although many studies have contributed to our understanding of cultural competence learning, any consideration of an organizational context was often missing from these discussions. To address this limitation, the present study focused on the cultural competence of domestic workers in internationalized workplace from both an individual and an organizational perspective.
This study used the person-environment interaction theory as the theoretical framework to examine cultural competence learning. Because people’s behaviors are influenced by their environment, individual competence development may not be fully understood if the research lens merely focuses on each individual without connecting to their organization.
Through a qualitative research design, this study examined cultural competence of Taiwanese workers in internationalized workplace. Both techniques, semi-structured interview and document review, were be used for data collection. The results indicated that Taiwanese workers in internationalized workplace needed cultural knowledge, skills, and sensitivity to accomplish their daily work. In addition, both individual and organizational aspects have effect on their intercultural competence development and should both be considered in the process.
