Project Details

Description

Currently there are more than a hundred commercially available textbooks for teaching business Chinese. Over 90% of them were published on Mainland China. In recent years Taiwan embarked on compiling business Chinese textbooks, but the progress was hampered by a lack of available lists of appropriate frequently-used business words. This project aimed at carrying out quantitative analysis of business Chinese lexicon. It resulted in compilation of a volume of Business Chinese High-frequency Words, containing 2,934 high-frequent occurring words and their collocations as justification for textbook compilation. The following series of research took us to the final goals: 1. We collected the business Chinese words from the 136 business Chinese textbooks published in 2000-2018 and compiled a database called Database of Lexical Items of Business Chinese Textbooks. Then the 2,570 words with occurrence frequency of 8 and higher made up a "Rudiment List of Frequently Used Chinese Business Words". 2. We analyzed the words included in Shuying Shen's The Word Syllabus of Business Chinese for Undergraduate Education, Hongmei Gan's Handbook of Business Chinese Vocabulary, the vocabulary included in the Business Chinese Test Syllabus (A) and the Business Chinese Test Syllabus (B). The 334 high frequent occurring shared words in these documents were added to the Rudiment List to form a List of Business Chinese High-frequency Words with a total of 2,934 items. 3. The items of the List of Business Chinese High-frequency Words were compared with those of the New Chinese Standard Test and with those of Taiwan's Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language to find the ratio of business Chinese words to common Chinese words. 4. The Database of the Economic Daily News of Taiwan Based at National Taiwan Normal University was used to collect the collocating words of the words in the List of Business Chinese High-frequency Words. The collocating words of these high-frequency words were added to the list. 5. The steps of research given above allowed us to complete the writing of the volume Business Chinese High-frequency Words.
