Project Details
Description
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental disorder, mainly affecting communication and social behavior. Since autism is a lifelong disability, children with ASD today grow into young adults with ASD. Their limitations in oral expression, communication, and social functioning cause problems in their studies, interpersonal relationships, and social adaptation. The burdens may not only be seen in their daily life and learning, but also in their family and the country. This project aims to develop pragmatic competence in youngsters with ASD by integrating two elements, i.e. procedural tasks and authentic contexts. Hence, this project has created a virtual world in Second Life for Kanner Youth to strengthen their ability in communication and social skills. In this way, it could support them in using the correct and appropriate language for social interaction and interpersonal. This project not only provides implications for designing intervention programs for young adults with ASD but also expands the knowledge pool for relevant research globally.
