Description

Career vision and future development is important issue for college students. The purpose of the study was to explore emerging adults’ perception of future career vision. In the first year (107-2410-H-003-039-), we interviewed 32 college students and graduates aged from 18 to 27 in focused group, the content of interview was about participants’ experiences of career development and imagination, vison, attitudes and connotation of the future. Data collected in the interview were transcribed and analyzed by grounded analysis in order to establish the hypothesized Career Vision Model. The second and third year is the current two-year project. We developed the Career Vision Inventory based on the results of the first year, which included future vision and Chinese culture. The final version included 5 subscales: negative future, positive future, positive beliefs, occupational information, and stress from the family, totally 29 items. The Cronbach’s α coefficients ranged from .66 to .94. The test-retest reliability coefficients ranged from .58 to .85. As far as the validity, ffter three modification phase for the inventory, the confirmatory factor analysis of the inventory showed high adaption, composite reliability coefficient of .6, and average variance extracted coefficient of .5, indicated that the model had good construct reliability and convergent validity. In the third year, we developed a curriculum program based on action-oriented Hope-Centered Career Counseling and the RAISE-up model that was previously developed by Tien, embedded them in Life Design Model. The experimental group, with 37 participants, attended the Hope-Centered Life Design course and the control group, with 30 participants attended traditional career exploration course. The results of Mixed design ANOVA indicated significant main effect. The students’ perception of career complexity decreased. The students’ post-test on Positive beliefs, Career control and life satisfaction increased significantly. The follow-up interview also indicated that the students learned a lot from both Hope-centered Life Design course and the traditional career exploration. The detailed findings were discussed. Suggestions for future research and practice were also provided.
